Artist: Bob Dylan
Author: Bob Dylan
Label: CBS
Year: 1967
One of 161 Basement Tapes. There are two versions of Quinn: one with Garth Hudson as a one-man parade band, then there's the (longer) version that was released officially on the Biograph box set. The live version that came out on Self Portrait as The Mighty Quinn was recorded during his Isle Of Wight concert.
Covers:
Manfred Mann [n°1 UK & B, top 10 US as The Mighty Quinn; first heard it on Dylan's White Album (mother of all bootlegs) under the counter at Feldmans Music on Charing Cross Road]
Tinus Plotseling [as Quinn De Eskimo; alias Peter Tetteroo]
Denzel Washington [as police officer Xavier Quinn in film The Mighty Quinn; Denzel is obviously a Dylan-fan: he's also Hurricane Carter in The Hurricane]
Kris Kristofferson [on 50 Years Amnesty International tribute Chimes Of Freedom]
Inspired by the Eskimo in the Nicholas Ray film The Savage Innocent (1960), symbol of pure freedom.
