Dylan wrote it after the break-up with Suze Rotolo (the girl on the Freewheelin' cover). His oldest recording was made on tape by his friend Tony Glover in Minneapolis, MN in August '62 and came out on Through The Open Window - Bootleg Series Vol 18 ('25).
