RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET

Created on 01/04/2001
Latest update on 14/03/2025

Artist: Lew Stone & His Band
Author: Hugh Williams/Jimmy Kennedy
Label: Regal Zonophone
Year: 1935

Vocal: Joe Ferrie. Hugh Williams is an alias for Wilhelm Grosz, who wrote Isle Of Capri with Kennedy earlier on (another Lew Stone original). Both songs were interpolated into the Broadway musical Provincetown Follies later that year, sung there by Phyllis Austin. Northern Irish Jimmy Kennedy wrote Red Sails in Portstewart, where a fishing boat monument was erected to mark the occasion. Local fishing boat Kitty Of Coleraine, mentioned in the song, was restored and is on display.
