Lyrics were a poem by Oppenheim, published in 1911 and inspired by suffragette Helen Todd who ended a political speech with the words: Bread for all, and roses too. First scored by Caroline Kohlsaat in 1917, a version apparently never recorded. Sing Out! published the sheetmusic in '52 and that's how Mimi Farina got involved, adding her own music.
