Bruce wrote it for Elvis and even sent him the demo couple of weeks before he died, piling up the heap at Graceland (see also: Feels Like I'm In Love). When Elvis passed away, Springsteen gave the song to Link Wray & (Elvis fan) Robert Gordon, as witnessed by Eric Geevers, who played bass on Link's last three records and toured with Robert Gordon & Chris Spedding. An official Bruce version (from December '78) came with live box set 1975-1985, but he first recorded it during the Darkness On The Edge Of Town sessions, bootlegged on Do I Have To Say His Name? The Jersey Devil Hits Again, along with an author's version of Because The Night. Both of these authors' studio versions were saved-up officially for The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story (2010).
