The Irish equivalent of 'one for the road'. Irish (and Scottish) parting song since days before Auld Lang Syne. First appeared on broadsides in the 1770s. The tune dates from the 17th century; reproduced in the Guthrie Manuscript of 1675. Also known as Good Night and as Joy With You All. Sam Henry collected The Parting Glass in Ireland in 1938. In Folksongs Of Britain And Ireland, Peter Kennedy heard a similarity with Te Traa Gill Thie (It's Time To Go Home).
