Artist: Byrds
Author: Jim McGuinn/Gene Clark
Label: Together
Year: 1964

On lp Pre-Flyte (demo recordings of '64) in '69. Sounds like inspiration for early Mothers Of Invention.

Covers:

1968:

Turtles [top 10 US, using an organ beat inspired by The End of The Doors]

1969:

Lettermen

1989:

De La Soul [sample of the Turtles' version in Transmitting Live From Mars on millionselling 3 Feet High And Rising lp]

1991:

Salt-N-Pepa [top 10 NL & B]

1997:

Lightning Seeds

1998:

Caesar [major part of the melody in Before My Head Explodes]

2002:

Lutricia McNeal

2019:

Jakob Dylan [with Cat Power in film Echo In The Canyon]

Chart-topping 3 Feet High And Rising lp made it interesting for sampled artists to start sueing De La Soul. That's exactly what the Turtles did successfully. The judge's decision had a big influence on the future of rap and hiphop. From now on samples had to be cleared prior to release. Sample-rich records like The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique became more or less impossible or had to be postponed for legal reasons.
