Artist: Harry Cox
Author: traditional
Label: Rounder
Year: 1953
Reissued on Alan Lomax's Portrait series. Harry was an unspoiled folk singer from Yarmouth with a repertoire from before the Great War, learned from his father and grandfather. As he was an old man at the time of recording, these really were songs from Napoleon's time.
Covers:
Steeleye Span [opening track of their debut album Below The Salt]
Harry Cox (1885-1971) failed to witness Steeleye Span's version and it's probably better that way. For He disliked musical instruments (let alone electric ones), believing they distracted from the storyline in songs.
