The Isley Brothers were supposed to cut this track first. But they messed with the lyrics (turning it into Are You Lonely By Yourself as heard on Ace cd Shout And Twist With Rudolph, Ronald & O'Kelly). When Burt Bacharach found out, he objected. With twenty minutes of studio time left, The Isleys recorded Twist And Shout, changing course and securing their destiny.
Covers:
Dionne Warwick [on her first album; she'd demo-ed this song and secretly expected her version would be put out first; her first reaction towards the authors when she found out she came second: Don't make me over!]
Burt Bacharach [author; album title track]
Claude François [as N'essaie pas de me mentir]
Walker Brothers [n°1 UK]
