Legend has it that while touring the US, Hunky Dory sleeve artist George Underwood played this riff on the bus when David summed up his guitar, changed a few notes to end up with the Jean Genie's riff. Apart from this legend, Bowie's biggest influence was Bo Diddley's Oh Yea (see there).
