Influenced by the black folk song of the same name, possibly written by Reese Dupree in 1905 and first published in 1915 as Shortened Bread in Songs And Rhythms Of The South (E.C. Perron). More versions in the 20s & 30s by Paul Robeson, Nelson Eddy, Earl Johnson, Dykes Magic City Trio and The Andrews Sisters.
