PIECE OF MY HEART

Artist: Erma Franklin
Author: Jerry Ragovoy/Bert Berns
Label: Shout
Year: 1967

Older sister of Aretha, with Eric Gale on bass. Shout was one of Bert Berns' labels. Janis Joplin's cover blocked Erma's breakthrough. Revitalised by a jeans commercial, for once advertising with a real original.

Writers Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy are specialised in shouted soul: Jerry also wrote Cry Baby (Janis Joplin) and Time Is On My Side (Irma Thomas, Rolling Stones). Bert was the man who lured Van Morrison to the States and who wrote his Here Comes The Night. Everybody Needs Somebody To Love is also by him. Bert Berns was streetwise, Ragovoy sophisticated. Jerry was shocked by the Big Brother & The Holding Company cover, just as he was shocked the first time he heard what the Stones had done with his Time Is On My Side (see there).
