Volgens A.L. Lloyd danken we dit aan songcollector, zeepfabrikant en radical agitator Thomas Doubleday, die hierover schreef in Blackwood's magazine in 1821. Hij had de melodie gehoord bij een straatzanger uit Newcastle. In Northhumbrian Minstrelsy (1882) wordt de tune aangeduid als My Love Is Newly Listed.
