Artist: Babs' Three Bips And A Bop
Author: Babs Gonzales
Label: Blue Note
Year: 1947
Scat singer and drummer Babs Gonzales (real name: Lee Brown) made up this tune around 1943 while touring with a vocal group including Nadine Cole, Nat's first wife. Worked with Benny Carter, Max Roach and Bud Powell. Re-issued on double cd The Blue Note Years Vol. 1 - Boogie, Blues & Bop.
Covers:
Dizzy Gillespie [mostly credited and associated with him; his version for RCA outsold the original; Babs sued Victor but it was settled out of court]
Dirty Dozen Brass Band [with Dizzy Gillespie]
Title possibly inspired Jesse Hill for his Ooh Poo Pah Do (1959), covered by Ike & Tina Turner.
