Using an old folk melody from Silesia, German composer Johann Peter Cornelius d'Alquen (1800-1863) wrote Mops und Möpschen, inspired by a poem August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote in 1844 (Was ist schuld daran). Dutch translation in 1865 by J.J.A. Goeverneur, an author from Groningen, who also wrote Op Twee Haasjes (in een groen groen knolle knolle land) and Mijnheer Prikkebeen.
