Lyrics were written by JJA Goeverneur (as Het Roodborstje Aan Het Venster) and published in songbook De Zingende Kinderwereld in 1866. His poem was translated from German poem Fogel am Fenster by Wilhelm Hey, first published in Fümfzig Fabeln für Kinder in 1833, the very same year the original English melody was written.
