Artist: Cuartete Caney
Author: Maria Teresa Vera/Guillermina Aramburu
Label: Columbia
Year: 1938

Almost veinte años older than the author's own version, released forty years before the Buena Vista Social Club's. That same Cuban Cuarteto Caney came up with the first Guajira Guantanamera in that same '38 (see there).

Covers:

1956:

Maria Teresa Vera y Lorenzo Hierrozuelo [lyricist Guillermina Aramburu and Maria Teresa Vera were close friends; Guillermina wrote the words in '35 following the painful break-up of a relationship that lasted for veinte años and never wanted to see her name connected with Maria Teresa's song; for being that personal, Vera waited another veinte años before cutting her own version; Vera's partner here, Lorenzo Hierrozuelo, was also the partner of Compay Segundo in Cuban duo Los Compadres; that's where Compay got his nickname from, being the one who always sang second voice]

1997:

Buena Vista Social Club [vocal: Omara Portuondo]

2000:

Omara Portuondo [finally crediting Aramburu; Omara also cut M.T. Vera's He Perdido Contigo for this solo album]
