Joe (Rivers) was a singer from Charleston, NY and was the neighbor of composer Rex Garvin (see: Emulsified and Sock It To 'Em JB). Johnnie was the daughter of J&S label boss Zell Sanders in New York. Chess took over when J&S couldn't handle the success any longer. Zell later formed The Jaynetts around Johnnie (see: Sally Go Round The Roses).
