Barbara Campbell is the maiden name of Barbara Cooke, Sam's wife and an alias for Lou Adler, Herb Alpert and Sam Cooke combined. Title inspired by Lou Rawls' stepsister who'd just turned 16. Steve Rowland, a friend of Ricky Nelson, was scheduled to cut it first but his manager objected.
