Artist: Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Author: Modeste Moussorgski/Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Year: 1886

Russian title: Ivanova Noch Na Lisoy Gore. Moussorgski was inspired by the story St. John's Eve by Nicolai Gogol and the music Totentanz by Frans Liszt. Completed posthumously (Moussorgski died in 1881) by his fellow composer Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. It's an orchestral tone-poem, preserving the basic thematic structure of a full opera with working title The Witch (ready to set up a midsummernite's Black Mass on a wuthering height near Kiev). First performed in St. Petersburg (Kononov Hall) with Rimsky-Korsakov conducting the orchestra of the Russian Symphony Concerts.
