Artist: Tony Scott
Author: Tony Scott
Label: Estick
Year: 1969

Scott credited himself; producer Harry J was credited on the hit versions, earning him a new studio. Band members the Hippy Boys, featuring the Barrett Brothers, Bob Marley's later rhythm section, never shared in the financial rewards, however: slightly reminiscent of Alton Ellis' Girl I've Got A Date from '66.

Covers:

1969:

Tommy McCook & The Supersonics [rocksteady version as The Liquidator on Lanark]

1969:

Harry J. All Stars [idem as instrumental; Top 10 UK; Harry J put an organ solo by Winston Wright over the vocals]

1972:

Staple Singers [bass intro of I'll Take You There; n°1 US; reggae experiment following some Muscle Shoals musicians' visit to Jamaica]

1974:

Reuben Wilson [instrumental]

1991:

Bebe & Cece Winans feat. Mavis Staples [idem]

2022:

Rory Block [idem]

Usually reggae boys got inspired by American soul, here it's the other way around. I'll Take You There was later sampled in Let's Talk About Sex (Salt-n-Pepa - '91).
