Artist: Patsy Kelly & Bert Lahr
Author: Jimmy McHugh/Dorothy Fields
Year: 1927
Two poor kids on the boardwalk in Broadway revue Harry Delmar's Revels. Originally with more lyrics.
Covers:
Ethel Waters [with Duke Ellington's orchestra]
Aida Ward [as I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Lindy in Lew Leslie's revue Blackbirds]
Cliff Edwards [n°1 US]
Johnny Hamp's Kentucky Serenaders [vocal by Hal White, oldest recording on Victor]
Connie Boswell [with The Ramblers]
Katherine Hepburn [in film Bringing Up Baby]
Fats Waller [with Adelaide Hall for HMV in London, one year later with Una Mae Carlisle for Bluebird in New York]
Marlène Dietrich [in film Seven Sinners]
Tony Bennett [and in 2014 in duet with Lady Gaga]
Strangers [as 'n Nief Voituur]
Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields also co-wrote I'm In The Mood For Love and On The Sunny Side Of The Street. Apparantly Jimmy bought the song from Fats Waller and Andy Razaf behind coauthor Dorothy Fields' back. Fact is, when Andy Razaf was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame and was asked to name his favorite own composition, he whispered: "I Can't Give You Anything But Love".
