A first Shondells version was a regional hit in the Midwest in '63. Two years later a DJ from Pittsburg started pushing that version and so Tommy James recruited a new line-up of the Shondells, with members of the (first) Raconteurs and recorded the Hanky Panky that made it to the top. Johnny Hudson & The Riptides' Hanky Panky ('59 - Challenge) was another one (written by Hudson/Dietrich/Sawyers).
