Roud #5134. The MacCrimmons, members of the MacLeods clan, were a dinasty of pipers since the 16th century on the Isle of Skye. That's where pipers from all over Scotland and Ireland came to learn the trade. The MacCrimmon this song is about was killed during the 1745 Jacobean rebellion. Story goes he even composed this very tune prior to his fatal engagement in the battle of Culloden. Lyrics were added by his brother, while the original Irish words were attribuated to their sister.
Covers:
Dick Gaughan [on LP No More Forever, which is part of the lyrics]
