FORTUNA IMPERATRIX MUNDI

Created on 13/01/2006
Latest update on 03/11/2023

Artist: Carl Orff
Author: Carl Orff
Year: 1937

From the Carmina Burana, first performed in France that year. Based upon troubadour poetry from a 13th century manuscript, found in a Bavarian Benedictine abbey.

Covers:

1983:

Freek de Jonge [as De Mythe]

1983:

Ray Manzarek

1991:

Fortuna [house version; n°1 NL & B as O Fortuna]

1992:

Apotheosis [idem; both this and Fortuna's dance version were succesfully sued by the Orff family]

1999:

Puff Daddy [sampled in Hate Me Now; hit UK & NL]

Numerous modern medieval music ensembles (like Ensemble Alegria in '91) detour the Orff interpretation and concentrate on the original Carmina manuscripts to come up with more authentic sounding music.
