So-called Stapellied or chain refrain, where part of each stanza is repeated and added with each new stanza. This version, the oldest known on record, refers to political situations in and around Hamburg in 1813, where French expansionism under Napoleon Bonaparte finally was halted. Jan Hinnerk was the personification of a famous tower in town nicknamed Isern Hinnerk (Iron Henry) guarding the port of Hamburg and demolished in 1727. However, more than ten years before Hamburg freed itself from the French, a similar Stapellied was printed in Amsterdam songbook Het Vrolyk Catootje (1801), subtitled: Een nieuw lied of Zamenspraak tusschen een Duitscher, Franschman, Rusch, Engelschman, Jood, Portugees en Hollander, welke allen met Catootje en haar meid in gezelschap zijn geweest. Some initial lines echo aria Non Più Andrai from W.A. Mozart opera Le Nozze Di Figaro.
