Old German christmas carol. Lyrics first published in the Gebetbüchlein des Frater Conradus (1582). Lyrics and music first matched in 1599 in Alte Catholische Geistliche Kirchengesänge, one of two volumes in Köln. As a protestant, Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) re-oriënted the focus from the virgin Mary to the imminent coming of the Messiah (Isaiah 11:1). Johannes Brahms used it in 1896 (op. 122, n°8) while Theodore Baker adapted it in English in 1894 as Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming.
