Artist: Eric Von Schmidt
Author: Eric Von Schmidt
Label: Prestige
Year: 1964

On his second lp Eric Sings Von Schmidt. (see also: He Was A Friend Of Mine). Written while on St. Vincent as a painter. Von Schmidt was a visual artist first.

Song about Ebenezer Joshua, first Chief Minister of St. Vincent & the Grenadines between 1951 and '67. Gained power as a union leader concerned about working conditions on the sugarcane cutting fields. But instead of solving the situation, things got worse when at the height of a general strike among plantation workers, Joshua went to visit nearby Barbados while the strike was broken with 'some tough fellows from Zion Hill'. The stuff where protest songs were made off in '64.
