Meia Praia is a place in the Algarve province, Portugal. Afonso is like a Léo Ferré or even a Victor Jara for Portugal. He began as a traditional fado singer, but in the sixties during the anti colonial uprising in Angola and Mozambique, his song lyrics reached another level: they literally triggered the 1974 April revolution. His Grandola, Vila Morena (Grandola, Brown City), broadcasted on Radio Renascença at 0.30 am, April 25, was the signal for the army to take command and cut down dictatorship.

Covers:

1993:

Dulce Pontes [holds José Afonso for spiritual father, like she holds Amalia Rodrigues as spiritual mother]

2007:

Paula Oliveira
