Artist: Cripple Clarence Lofton
Author: Clarence Lofton
Label: Vocalion
Year: 1937
Rent party piano player from Chicago, popular among jazz fans. Variation on his two years older Strut That Thing, with Big Bill Broonzy on guitar (re-issued on Yazoo). Although handicapped he left the other versions 14 years behind. His is a rather primitive rendition. John Belushi was right calling Lofton the original, but the Blues Brothers' version was a pure copy of Mabon's ("This is a Willie Mabon song also done by Cripple Clarence Lofton").
Covers:
Willie Mabon [first real big hit for Chess (first released on Parrot)]
Linda Hayes [answer song as Yes I Know]
Annisteen Allen [idem]
Richard Berry [sequel as Next Time]
