Artist: Cripple Clarence Lofton
Author: Clarence Lofton
Label: Vocalion
Year: 1937
Rent party piano player from Chicago, popular among jazz fans. Variation on his two years older Strut That Thing, with Big Bill Broonzy on guitar (reissued on Yazoo). Although handicapped he left the other versions 14 years behind. His is a rather primitive rendition. John Belushi was right calling Lofton the original, but the Blues Brothers' version was a pure copy of Mabon's.
Covers:
Willie Mabon [first real big hit for Chess (first released on Parrot)]
Linda Hayes [answer song as Yes I Know]
Anisteen Allen [idem]
Richard Berry [sequel as Next Time]
