On his first lp. Two years later also in film Fat City. Rejected by Dottie West for 'immoral connotations'. Adultery was allowed as a topic in country songs but not without guilt. Since there wasn't any in this one, Kristofferson didn't even mind shopping it around. He actually wrote it on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico while working as a helicopter pilot for PHI in Morgan City, LA. (see also: Me And Bobby McGee)
