Child ballad #39. Roud #35. Classic elfland ballad first mentioned in The Complaynt Of Scotland (1549). Words since 1769. For John Peel (Top Gear), reissued on the Fairport Unconventional box set and as bonus track on the 2002 edition Heyday. In 1970 on Liege & Lief (Island). In '56 Hamish Henderson collected two field recordings of Tam Lin, one in Glasgow, the other in Aberdeen, both released in '75 on anthology The Muckle Songs - Scottish Tradition 5 but quiet different from Fairport's.
