BLACK BUT SWEET

Latest update on 31/07/2010

Artist: Wilmoth Houdini
Author: Frederick Wilmoth Hendricks
Label: Brunswick
Year: 1931

Reissued on Poor But Ambitious - Calypso Classics From Trinidad 1928-1940 (Arhoolie).

Covers:

1994:

Sabres Of Paradise [as Wilmot]

1995:

Mighty Dub Kats [house version as Son Of Wilmot]

2003:

Shantel [as Bucovina; German DJ Stefan Hantel, his ancestors come from this region, part Rumania part Ukraine]

2008:

Ian Oliver feat. Shantel [idem; n°3 ESP, hit B & NL]

Funny how German DJ Shantel places this particular tune with the north-eastern Balkan area. With his Bucovina Club Orkestar, he was all the rage by combining dancebeats with traditional Balkan music. By all means, this tune originates from Trinidad. It's not possible to confuse calypsonian Wilmoth Houdini with the Hungarian born escape artist Harry Houdini, or is it?
