Artistic whistler, one of the first popular recording artists. N°2 US. Imitating a Sicilian melody, used by John Howard Payne in his opera Clari (The Maid Of Milan), first staged in Covent Garden in 1823 (by Miss M. Tree in the title role). New Yorker Payne (1791-1852) was an actor, writer and finally the American consul in Tunesia where he died, not even owning a home sweet home of his own. Opera diva Jenny Lind's standard encore (1820-1887), also popular with Christina Nilsson and Adelina Patti in the days just before the recording era.
