Both Franz Liszt and Louis Moreau Gottschalk (for piano) and Francesco Tarrega (for guitar) wrote arrangements on this same melody. Novelty hit How Much Is That Doggie In The Window (see there) follows a very similar melody line. The dog song of Vladimir in Act 2 of Samuel Beckett's play En Attendant Godot/Waiting For Godot (1953), that's the same year How Much Is That Doggie hitted! Children songs Mijn Hoed Die Heeft Vier Deuken (Vier Deuken Heeft Mijn Hoed) (NL), Mein Hut der hat drei Ecken (GER), My Hat It Has Three Corners (EN) also use this melody.
