The expression goes back upon Lola Montez, an Irish dancer and courtisane (1821-1861) who became the mistress of excentric king Ludwig I of Bavaria, who gave her a title, which costed him his throne. This most scandalous woman of the Victorian age was also close with Franz Liszt and Alexandre Dumas.
