Con el Mariachi de Alfonso Lopes. Mexican folklorist who spent a lifetime studying pre Columbian musical culture. This ranchera had been around for decades before Los Lobos even heard of it.
The melody line is strongly related with Andrés Berlanga's ranchera Las Quejas De Zenaida, an answer song on Zenaida (Los Madrugadores). Berlanga's career began in the thirties in San Antonio, using the same hotel room where Robert Johnson cut his famous recordings. Las Quejas De Zenaida is featured on the soundtrack of TexMex documentary Del Mero Corazón (Arhoolie). See also: Piensa En Mi.
