Artist: Bobby Setter's Cash & Carry
Author: Werner Thomas/Rendall
Label: Cannon
Year: 1973

Moog synthesizer version of a Swiss instrumental, six years older than the famous Electronica's version, imported in the Lowlands by Belgian music publisher Louis Van Rijmenant, who signed under alias Rendall for the 'lyrics'. Swiss accordion player Thomas composed the melody in '58 and even claimed he invented the ducky dance steps (around '63).

Covers:

1973:

Werner Thomas [accordion version as Tschip Tschip and as Ententanz; loathed the electronic version until he was offered a golden record in Antwerp]

1974:

Hector Delfosse [as La Dance des canards; accordion version and millionseller]

1980:

Electronica's [as De Vogeltjesdans; second bestselling NL single of the year, first released as a B-side of Radio 2000]

1981:

J.J. Lionel [vocal version as La Danse des canards]

1981:

Juul Kabas [as Doe De Vogeltjesdans]

1981:

Al Bano & Romina Power [vocal version]

1981:

Tweets [n°2 UK as The Birdie Song (Birdie Dance); an all time favorite on the most annoying songs list]

1992:

T-Birds [as Birds Dance hit NL]

1995:

SMT [as De Vogeltjes Dance]

2006:

Weird Al Yankovic [intro Polkarama]

Werner Thomas wasn't at all jealous of the successful covers. At least he didn't have to worry about the distribution and such ("Mir war der Rummel sowieso zu viel").
