RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET

Created on 01/04/2001
Latest update on 26/10/2023

Artist: Lew Stone & His Band
Author: Hugh Williams/Jimmy Kennedy
Label: Regal Zonophone
Year: 1935

Vocal: Joe Ferrie. Hugh Williams is an alias for Wilhelm Grosz, who wrote Isle Of Capri with Kennedy earlier on (another Lew Stone-original). Both songs were interpolated into the Broadway musical Provincetown Follies later that year, sung there by Phyllis Austin. Irish Jimmy Kennedy wrote Red Sails in Portstewart, where a fishing boat monument was erected to mark the occasion. Local fishing boat Kitty Of Coleraine, mentioned in the song, was restored and is on display.
