The first piece he wrote after a nervous breakdown following the bad reception of his first symphony. He was cured through hypnosis and so he dedicated this second piano concerto to his medic. Published in 1901. Oldest recording with Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia orchestra, Victor's first attempt to record a full concerto (solist and orchestra), even if electrical recording facilities (with microphone) weren't available yet.

The first movement of this Piano Concerto (Moderato, first recorded in 1929, again with Leopold Stokowski and Rachmaninoff himself, was covered by Tommy Dorsey in '41 as I Think Of You; vocal: Frank Sinatra. Full Moon And Empty Arms (see theere) is another song Frank Sinatra recorded borrowing melody lines from Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto (third movement Allegro Scherzendo).
