While The Band original covers an episode from the American Civil War (either the night between the 3rd and the 4th of July 1863 when both Gettysburg and Vicksburg were lost for the Confederacy, or May 10 1865 when Richmond fell and President Jefferson Davis was captured), the German hit version (lyrics written by Hans-Ulrich Weigel) relates about Kanne Kramer, one of the first drug casualties in Germany.
