On a poem from Müller's volume of verse Gedichte aus den hinterlassenen Papiere eines reisenden Waldhornisten, part of Die Winterreise. Schubert composed Die Winterreise songcycle in the year Müller died and shortly before his own death. Probably first performed in public by his friend Johann Michael Vögl.
