From Berg en Terblijt (NL Limburg), recorded in Cadier en Keer. Always sang while milking, never while hauling water for that was too heavy. On box set Onder De Groene Linde, a compilation of Ate Doornbosch's VARA radio series.

2005:

Pladek [as Onnefretterslied; folk trio from Reet (Belgium), specialized in traditional music from the Rupel region]

Very familiar tune, at least for someone coming from Boom (Rupel region in Belgium). People from Boom are nicknamed Hondenfretters (Dog Eaters), for dog abattoirs operating from there during WW I and providing the whole region (Antwerp included) of a minimum amount of meat since the Germans confiscated all cattle. Butchering dogs is an honorable trade in war-time crowned with a song, remembered by any local elder: Onnefretterslied, AKA De Boomse Brabançonne. It's not mentioned in Ate Doornbosch's magnum opus, although he's well aware of the cross pollination between Flemish and Dutch folk repertoires. See also: 't Was Des Nachts Om Twalef Uren.
