| (Walter Vinson/Lonnie Chatmon) |
| (o): | Mississippi Sheiks (1930) | label: Okeh |
| | The arrangement leans on Tommy Johnson's Big Road Blues (see there), but lyrics, part of the melody and even Howlin' Wolf's Smokestack howl are rooted in this Mississippi Sheiks tune. In fact, Wolf was inspired by Jimmie Rodgers' yodel: "I wanted to yodel in the worst way, and all that I could do was make that howl". |
| (c): | Howlin' Wolf (1956) [as Smokestack Lightnin', leaning heavily on his Crying At Daybreak ('51)], Manfred Mann (1963) [as Smokestack Lightnin' and in '65 as LSD], Yardbirds (1964) [idem; with Eric Clapton], Animals (1966) , Kinks (1968) [as The Last Of The Steam Powered Trains], Axis (1969) , Hard Meat (1969) , Bintangs (1972) , Grateful Dead (1973) , Green On Red (1985) , Soundgarden (1988) , George Thorogood (1988) , Lynyrd Skynyrd (1991) [all as Smokestack Lightnin'], John Hammond (1998) [as Crying At Daylight], Chris Whitley (2000) [as Smokestack Lightning], |
