QUINN THE ESKIMO

< previous next >

(Bob Dylan)
(o):Bob Dylan (1967)label: CBS
One of 161 Basement Tapes. Many remain unreleased. There are two versions of Quinn: one (with Garth Hudson as a one-man parade band) circulates only on bootleg. Then there's the (longer) version that was released officially on the Biograph box set. The live version that came out on Self Portrait as The Mighty Quinn was recorded during his Isle Of Wight set.
(c):Ian & Sylvia (1968) , Gary Puckett & The Union Gap (1968) , Ramsey Lewis (1968) , Ventures (1968) , Julie London (1968) , Manfred Mann (1968) [n°1 B as The Mighty Quinn], 1910 Fruitgum Co. (1968) , Hollies (1969) , Manfred Mann's Earth Band (1978) , Denzel Washington (1989) [as police officer Xavier Quinn in film The Mighty Quinn; Denzel's obviously a Dylan-fan: he's also Hurricane Carter in The Hurricane], Phish (2010) , Kris Kristofferson (2011) [on 50 Years Amnesty International tribute Chimes Of Freedom],

Inspired by the Eskimo in the Nicholas Ray film The Savage Innocent (1960), symbol of pure freedom on American soil.
